And then I somehow fell upon this nice, succinct description of the problem with that book/movie:

I quit reading that particular book because I found it a bit too White Lady Saves the Day. You know, the precious self-congratulatory oh looky she is so nice and dignifies the 'noble savage' working class. blech.
